First thunderstorms of the year
First thunderstorms of the year arrived, with a low pressure system developing next to the islands.  This indicates winter season is in full force now.

Windy days are back
Strong winds are back, this time bringing passing showers which you'll see on the radar screens.  These are mostly low moisture clouds that are fast moving.

Fireworks on New Years Eve
Look for the fireworks show on the Diamond Head webcam at around midnight HST.  You should be able to see some of the stuff around then.  You might even catch some other aerial fireworks earlier in the evening.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Still windy..
Wind continues to be strong, with a high pressure system over the islands.  Dew point has dropped making the apparent temperature a lot cooler than normal.  It would be a good day to go out to the Pali if you wanted to get blasted by some super strong wind, due to the wind amplification effects.  Some ground areas reporting winds of 30mph, so at the Pali it could gust up to 60.

Windy..
The cold front passed by Hawaii a few days ago, bringing windy conditions and chilly weather.  Still hasn't broken the 70 degree barrier yet though, so 'unofficially' we aren't in winter yet.

System news
We got everything moved over from the old server and onto the new.  Things working great so far.  We've also restored webcam2 to full operation.  Weather here is so far rather pleasant; not too hot nor has gotten cold.  Not a night below 70 here yet.

New server
We are in the process of migrating the web server to a new location.  This could lead to some intermittent downtime.  The new server is significantly faster (and cheaper) than the old.

Earthquake
We had an Earthquake today which took down electricity island-wide literally all day long; power was only restored recently. During the interim, the website functioned (as it's offsite) but data would not have been registered. However, we expect to be back to normal now.

Lightning weekend
Had some weird weather the past day. Lighnting counter went crazy around 1pm, with over 250 lightning strikes in about a two hour period. Although the lightning was miles away from our location and thunder couldn't be heard much; a bit of rain but nothing substantial here. Other areas on the isle fared much worse, just goes to show how much difference the weather can be here in Hawaii just a few miles away.

Rainy, wet, but not cold
Weather the past week has been rainy, with southerly winds turning variable sometimes. No trade winds at all. This has led to gloomy skies and showers with higher levels of humidity. Although a definite sign of winter, it hasn't been cold at all, with temps not having dipped below 70 yet.

Webcam2
I've repaired webcam2 after noticing it went offline. Problem was due to a faulty wire. It's been raining a lot here so I haven't been able to adjust the optimal cam view.

Been busy
Been busy with other things lately so haven't had a chance to work on the site much the past weeks. But we've planned a small little holiday promotion in the works -- winners will get small prizes. Stay tuned!

Moisture meter installed
Finally got to install the new Moisture meter and its leaf wetness sensor. I've added the leaf wetness sensor numerical indicator to the main page. It's, however, uncalibrated right now since I need to adjust the settings which will take quite a while..

Moisture Meter purchased
The moisture meter has been purchased and should arrive next week. I'll try to get the unit installed by next weekend if all goes well. The unit will provide some new interesting weather data!

Web page tweaks
I've made some minor changes to the webpages, tweaking with image sizes and such. Also, on the main weather page, today's and yesterday's high/low is now replaced with a table instead of the old image. The current weather stats has an updated table as well. In all, the new optimizations should help load the pages significantly faster for those on dialup modems and a tiny bit faster for those on broadband.

Windy days
Been very windy here the past few days, with constant gusts and just high amounts of air moving. It's really nice because the days don't get as hot! Is this the first sign of summer being over? Could be..

New wind sensor online
Finally got the AAG 1-wire wind speed and directional unit online. Installation took quite a while due to the wiring, pole mounting, and other issues! But it now works.. The unit itself is amazing, allowing for 2 second wind updates to our local weather server. As a result, I've increased the time of uploads of our live weather center to 8 seconds since there's better resolution.. The old Lacrosse wind unit was moved slightly but still in operation but will not be the data you see posted here.

Lightning weekend
Had some lightning over the weekend but it wasn't too exciting out here, most of it far away, off in the ocean. Still could see it but hardly hear the thunder. Lightning detector picked up some spikes on Saturday evening. Unfortunately the detector was offline all day on Friday evening/Sat daytime as the 1-wire interface plug was pulled out by a cat here! I didn't realize until later in the night..

Heavy Rain and lightning
Heavy Rain and lightning will likely arrive tomorrow and Saturday. Satellite images show extreme thunderclouds heading over and should be over the island tomorrow night.

Hottest day so far
Today we had the hottest day by far this year. Temp was 91 with high humidity causing a heat index of nearly 100F. Humidex hit nearly 45C with a dew point reaching 74F.
25 Sep 2005 by Steve

Humid day
Today we had some classic September weather with a high heat index of 96F, Humidex exceeding 42C and dew point exceeding 72F pretty much all day, which makes for some very uncomfortable weather. Add to that very light wind and the air was hot, humid, with no relief. Truly a miserable day of weather.

Thunderstorms today
Had some thunderstorms in the area today, not a whole lot but enough to trigger the lightning detector and it did so quite well with a lot of strikes around 2pm or so.

Goodbye to Jova
Jova now a tropical storm and is expected to go extratropical in a day or two. So it wont affect Hawaii after all, which is of course, good news.
22 Sep 2005 by Steve

Jova's track changes slightly
Hur. Jova changes slightly in forecast to a more westerly course, which means it will move closer to the islands than originally forecasted. However, it is still projected to stay far away from Hawaii so no ill affects will be felt, other than potentially very humid conditions as the system approaches and potentially some thunderstorms from the fringes of the system. Stay tuned by checking in with us http://sophia.sophiajoyce.com/weather/hurricane.htm

Hurricane season is here
Officially Hawaii's hurricane season began much earlier in the Pacific Ocean but now is the first time a hurricane has entered the Central Pacific area in a long time. However, Hur. Jova, though approaching near Hawaii, is forecasted to go above the Hawaiian islands (quite rare) and not affect the weather at all. Of course, forecasts can, and often are, wrong. Stay tuned by viewing the section on our weather site for up to date newshttp://sophia.sophiajoyce.com/weather/hurricane.htm

Cam 1 was offline
Cam 1 was offline for a few hours today due to a hardware error. Problem seemed to clear up when the cam was manually rebooted. Will monitor for possible future issues.

2nd webcam online
Second webcam is now online, but still in experimental stage. As such, there is only limited functionality on the webcam2 page and the page may go offline at any time.
